Notes from your Newsletter Editor

I have always loved sewing, knitting, crocheting and creating clothes and crafts. When my lovely neighbour, Katy, gave me the book “Quilts, Quilts, Quilts” in the 1990s, it inspired me to attempt this new (to me) art form.

That summer, my parents and I travelled to Lancaster County, Pennslvania to explore our family’s homestead. My father’s family were Old Order Mennonites who came to America from Switzerland in the 1700s. We visited family who are still Old Order Mennonites and the sleeping quilter in me awoke!

At a fabulous quilt shop, a young woman in traditional clothing, helped me choose fabric for a Fence Rail quilt. I absolutely loved this lap quilt! I machine piece the tops of my quilts and then hand quilt – which explains why my quilts take so long to finish.

Since I retired from teaching in 2015, and then from my retirement gig managing a small golf course in 2017, I have more time to quilt! I am looking forward to a great year at KQG and to keeping in touch through our newsletter, website and Facebook page.

Quilts for Survivors

Quilts for Survivors project is winding down. Our first five quilts have been sent out and at least one has been delivered and gratefully received.

If you have a finished quilt or quilt top or blocks, I can let you know how you can get it to a survivor. I will be wrapping up my contributions with the final few blocks I have already received.

Thank you to everyone who has participated.

Comfort Quilts

A note from Comfort Quilts. Many of you have indicated that you have completed quilts for the Comfort Quilt program. You may bring them to the September meeting and Waverley Reid will collect them. If you require labels, Waverley will have them for you.

To date, our Comfort Quilt group has not received approval to meet at Grace United Church. Perhaps in October??

Three seasonal table toppers made as bridal shower gifts for my nephew and his fiancee.
Table topper number four for my sister-in-law’s sister who saw the bridal shower ones. I was in four fabric stores looking for focus fabric – they were all awash in pumpkins!

Change to Membership Process

Below are the changes to our membership registration procedure. This will tell you what to expect when you arrive at our September 16 Guild meeting. We now have Kathleen Moraghan, a very experienced & computer knowledgeable person, on our Guild Executive. Kathleen has created a more stream-lined mechanism for membership and Block of the Month (BOM) registration. So, what is going to happen at our first in-person meeting on September 16? Well, before that meeting, Kathleen will merge the information from our membership database with the information from the BOM database she has created. She will then generate a partially completed registration form for each person on our current membership list.
Our priority for our first in-person meeting will be to abide by COVID distancing guidelines to keep everyone safe. At the September 16 meeting, upon entry to the Lions Gate Banquet Hall, locate the table that corresponds to the first initial of your last name. There will be four registration tables divided up as follows: Table 1 A-D; Table 2 E-K; Table 3 L-R; Table 4 S-Z. Give your name to the person at the appropriate table and she will locate your prepared registration form and ask you to review it for accuracy of the information. Please then review the permission statements relating to picture taking, email and the use of your information. We are asking you to initial acceptance of each statement and then add your signature and the date to the form. If you are new to the Guild and we do not have a preprinted form for you, we will have blank forms available for you to complete.
A reminder that the annual membership fee for KQG is $40 and for those participating in BOM, the fee is an additional $10 for the year. At present, you can pay by cheque (made out to Kempenfelt Quilters’ Guild) or with cash. We are presently working on facilitating e-transfer payments.
We are so looking forward to seeing each of you again and meeting our new members face-to-face.
See you on the 16th.

Block of the Month News

Thank you to everyone who participated in the “Log Cabin Fever” Block of the Month this past year. So far, the following are in this month’s draw: Brenda Ball, Diane Clarke, Janis Hamilton, Helen Gourley, Janet Hickling, Arlene Dauncey, Diana Smallwood, Marlene Haskett, Margarethah Norberg, Nancy Bell, Lynn MacDonald, Suzanne Coulson, Noreen Hamilton, Win Barsby, Dana Romanish, Sarah Day, Estelle Dion, Joanne Bent and Marg Parke. If there are any other members who have their quilt top finished but neglected to send in a photo, please do so prior to our September 16th meeting. If you have any questions, please email me or give a call.

Here is a reminder of the prizes to be won at our Sept. 16th meeting:

First Prize – Donated by Nicole Pelton, Nicole’s Longarm Quilting.

Nicole will quilt your “Log Cabin” quilt free of charge. (You must supply the batting and backing.)

Second Prize – Donated by Marlies Kinnell, Quilt Finish Longarm Studio

Marlies will donate a $50.00 gift certificate towards having your “Log Cabin Quilt” quilted by her.
(You must supply the batting and the backing.)

For those of you who miss out winning either of these two prizes, Nicole is offering to quilt your Log Cabin Quilt at a discount of 15% off plus no tax! (You must supply the batting and the backing.)

At the November meeting, those members present will be voting for their favourite quilt. From the photos I’ve seen so far, it will be a very difficult choice to make. Participants will bring in their totally finished “Log Cabin” quilt, which means that the quilt is to be quilted, bound and labelled.

Three prizes have been donated by quilt stores in our area.

“Country Concessions” – $50.00 Gift Certificate
“Thimbles and Things” – $25.00 Gift Certificate
“HummingBird Sewing” – $25.00 Gift Certificate

Don’t miss out!

A Message from Kathleen’s Cutting Table

Your New BOM Host

Hi everyone, Kathleen again. I’m so excited to be hosting the BOM. I’m counting the sleeps until we meet. Are you?
They say a picture is worth a thousand works and I have lots to say – LOL.

Join me and more than 40 others KQG members in this year’s BOM.  Sign-up online and pay your fees at our meeting.

Don’t forget to pick up your free freezer paper template for Septembers’ block, Pumpkin Pie, and your draw ticket to win seven yards of fabric in the BOM Sign-Up Draw. Fabrics donated by Northcott Fabrics. Both will be available at the registration tables.

After the meeting, you will be able to Login to access all the BOM patterns, templates, videos, tips and tricks and so much more.

New this Year. Please join me for a monthly BOM Sew Along Zoom Meeting. Hopefully, we can all meet together monthly online to chat about the block of the month, share our makes, sew together, have some fun and share some laughs. (Online meetings will depend on member interest)
Send me an email kmoraghan@kqg.ca if you would like to join me.

Enhance your KQG Experience!

When I was asked to join the KQG Executive, I was hesitant. I had served on volunteer boards before and they were deadly dull! The KQG Executive meeting was completely different and so much fun. The wonderful and very talented quilters who meet each month have a vision for KQG. We exchanged great ideas for meetings and programs. The ladies were all welcoming and so appreciative of me spending my time to help keep KQG running smoothly. They also understand that life gets in the way of quilting, sometimes, and that we cannot all attend every meeting.

There are several interesting positions to be filled on our Executive. If you would like to be a part of this dynamic and talented team, please sign up for any position. You may also choose to partner with another quilter to share the tasks. Even if you have served on the Executive in the past, perhaps it is time to join again and try a new position. I know that you will not regret joining the Executive, giving the Guild a small amount of your time and helping KQG to move forward.
