Pumpkin Pie Block Tip

Learn more about the scant 1/4″ seam allowance and why it is so important.

If you Google “scant 1/4″ seam allowance”, your search will return hundreds of blog posts, tutorials and videos.  Sometimes it is overwhelming to find what you are looking for online but I found 2 very well written blog posts that helped me to understand the need for the scant seam. They also explained how I could find my scant seam allowance.

Did you know that you can lose up to 1/32-1/16 of an inch with every seam.  So with the Pumpkin Pie block or any 5×5 grid block, that’s almost a 1/4″ that you’d lose on either direction! Thats reason enough to find and use a scant seam!

Have you ever considered how different fabrics would affect your seam allowance? Did you realize that Kona cotton is thicker than Art Gallery fabric, and both are thinner than Essex linen. This difference in thread count could also affect your seam allowance, so be sure to keep that in mind.

As a “newer” quilter, I find I am always online looking for information to help with my quilting journey. If you have a favourite resource.  Please share it below in the comments for our Block of the Month and quilting friends.

Happy reading and happy quilting.
